Netherhall win season’s curtain-raiser

LEAGUE champions Netherhall overcame cup winners Wigton Harriers in the curtain-raiser to the new season.
The game – the Keswick Launch-sponsored Charity Shield, in memory of Adam Rickerby – started well with both teams trying to find their feet.
Netherhall took a stronghold in the game with a low left foot shot from the edge of the area by Andrew Lowe to give them the lead.
It was the only real opportunity as the first half ended 1-0 to Netherhall.
The second started better for the Harriers, with pressure coming from several corners without really testing the Netherhall keeper.
The game was evenly matched with both teams making good use of their subs. On 75 minutes, Dawes latched on to a good through ball from Lowes to pass the ball passed the keeper to double the Netherhall lead.
Netherhall kept up the pressure, and on 85 minutes, finally got a free-kick on the edge of the area. Burgess stepped up and scored in the corner for 3-0.
The league proper starts on Saturday, with 2pm kick-offs, with the second set of fixtures on Wednesday (6.30pm)
