League starts mid-week games – but the weather has other ideas

THE first mid-week games of the Tesco Cumberland football season saw several games fall foul to flash downpours.

Netherhall’s clash against Silloth was saved by switching the game to Silloth but it didn’t affect the outcome.

Despite losing home advantage the defending champions won 6-1.

After Andy Hinde had put Silloth ahead, Tony Nicholson led the charge netting four times while Netherhall’s other strikes came from Dean Scholy and Dan Burgess.

Windscale carried on their good start to the season with a 7-1 home win against Mirehouse.

On target for Windscale were Andrew McDonald (4), Mike Farrer and Laurie Black while Carl Lofthouse hit the consolation goal for Mirehouse.

Workington Red House notched a good victory over Cleator Moor Celtic 5-1 with goals from Tom Pardini (2), Gareth Brunton (2) and Lee Wolf with Luke Close scoring for Celtic.

Only two games survived in division one with the spoils being shared in both games.

Parton Utd and Windscale Res drew 2-2, the Jenkins boys Josh and Carl scoring for Parton and Ashly Collins and Martin Sanderson replying for Windscale.

Workington Red Star and Hensinghan drew 3-3. Jamie Bramley (2) and Bradley Tatton scored for Red Star and Dan Wilkins hit Hensingham’s three.

At the weekend there was more disruption because of the weather, only five games being played.

In the premier division the two promoted sides contested a difficult game which ended with a 3-3 result.

Andy Hinde, Dale Gebby and Ryan Hanley scored for Silloth with the evergreen Pete O’Donnell (2) and Ryan Lowry replying for Windscale.

Wigton Harriers got a good 5-1 away win at Warwick Wanders with the impressive Mike Riding scoring four and Mark Armstrong getting the other for Wigton.

Carlisle City edges a nine-goal thriller 5-4 at Workington Red House.

Gary Lumsden, Liam Cook, Greg Armstrong and David Skelton sscored for home side but City went one better with strikes from Martin Coulthard (2), Jordan Irving, Dan Gardner and Ashley Pattinson.

Divison one saw Whitehaven Amateurs take the spoils 4-2 at local neighbours Bransty Rangers.

On target for Rangers were Reece Lancaster and Cameron Frazer with Tom McGady both scoring twice for Amateurs.

Frizington White Star got their season on track with a 3-1 win over Parton Utd. Alan Blair, Dean Rogers and Andy Lopez scored for Frizington and Dillon Corris replied for Parton.

Friday’s game saw Aspatria take the spoils 3-2 at Mirehouse. Carl Lofthouse scored twice for Mirehouse as did Richard Hudson for Aspatria. Darren Crichton’s goal for Aspatria made all the difference.

Cleator Moor Celtic’s run of three victories has been halted as a a result of the weather good old British summer time has resulted in Celtic’s last two games at Ashbrooke and home to Kirbymoorside, both called off as a result of waterlogged pitches.

Celtic host Silksworth on Wednesday then have two away games at Annfield Plain and Boldon
