Celtic end run of losses with hard fought equaliser

MATT Henney’s new-look Celtic team took to the field looking to end a run of seven without a win or a draw.

As Celtic head towards the end of the season Matt is having a look at the younger players at the club, and some are impressing the gaffer too.

Saturday saw second in the table Redcar visit McGrath Park and it was a good test for the lads with a mixture of young and old, I say old but the average age of the squad was just a mere 21 years of age.

The first chance fell to an unlikely source as Kevin Holiday hit a cracker after Hall had made the space but his shot went over, Scott Allison saves from the head of Edwards and Hall shot wide as Celtic push for the opening goal.

But the ref awarded a penalty to Redcar after he said Darren Little put hand to ball. Rather a harsh call but justice was done as Divine saved the spot kick from Billy Millington.

A Ryan Hall free kick and the keeper spilled the ball but no one in a hooped shirt reacted and the keeper collected at the second attempt.

The Wood brothers Liam and Lewis both had chances for Redcar but both shot wide as they turned round all square at 0 - 0

Redcar finished the half strong and carried that on in the second half as a Stuart Poulter free kick was saved but Divine, Millington shot wide after a short corner caught Celtic out.

Minutes later a corner kick was fired in by Celtic’s Bradley Rooney and it was Liam Wood who fired past his own keeper and a cracker it was too. Many a striker would have been proud to claim it.

But on 75 minutes a rare mistake by Divine let in Gregg Boughey and he fired home to make it 1 – 1.

But disaster struck as Tom Mahone picked the ball up and Boughey wanted to get things started rather quickly and Divine took exception to the way the striker had tried to get the ball from young Mahone and lashed out at the striker. That meant only one thing as the ref produced a red card.

So who would go in the nets well I would not have put money on Glyn Edwards but he did and what a show he put on kicking perfection and a couple of good saves in-between to help save his team from defeat.

Thanks to a fantastic save late on by Edwards it finished Cleator Moor Celtic 1 Redcar Athletic 1

Celtic went to Ryhope last night then host Coxhoe on Saturday then it is off to Jarrow on Wednesday and they finish of with a home game on Saturday, May 12 as Ashbroke visit McGrath Park
