Windscale lose out

THURSDAY saw torrential rain and both scheduled fixtures were rained off, but enough games were played in the Downtown Deli Cup to determine the semi-finalists.
The League champions, BCMS, were dismissed for 125 with only Matt Gorley 32 and Adam Chambers 33 reaching the retirement score, Lee Fleet with 3-10 and Adam Brown 2-10 giving the holders, Windscale Club Seascale, a chance to reach the semis. But Paul Knott (32 retired) apart their batsmen failed again, being dismissed for 106 – Wayne Nixon bagged 3 wickets for 8 runs.
The other game in the group was Sandwith Roofing v WCLS – a victim of the weather resulted in Sandwith Roofing claiming the runners-up place in the group.
Braithwaite secured a semi final place against Sandwith Roofing after a demolition job on the Royal George. David Chisnall made 23 out of 55-9 with Chris Rule 2-7 and Phil Knight 2-4 enjoying their bowling spells. Harry Rigby powered to 32 ret as the home side made 61-2.
Whitehaven Colts have the weather to thank for their semi final place – they were rained off v Braithwaite on June 7 as qualified via the back door. Cockermouth Academicals ran up 128-6 against them – with their top order again amongst the runs: Graham Spark 24, Jack Edmondson 26, Martin Daly 22 and Shakir Rajput 30 ret all enjoying the Whitehaven bowling. Ben Kanaghan 2-11 and Callum Lofthouse 2-10 being the most successful. They were then scuttled for only 38 as Rajput 3-3, Paul Heap 2-7 and Daly 2-1 cashed in. They are BCMS’ semi final opponents.
The only Challenge Vase match played saw a different side to the Alice Pitt Field than was on show last week – batsmen still found run scoring difficult, but the bowlers struggled to take wickets. Broughton were restricted to 110-5 as their openers Dave Smith 26 and Gary Swanston 32 ret batted well into the 24 overs, with James Gate 2-9 again the pick of the Isel bowlers. Broughton made Isel work to reach 101-4; Matt Eden 27, James Gate 30 ret and John Gate 22 doing the bulk of the scoring as Isel cemented their place atop the Challenge Vase table.
The other game was Seascale Juniors v Broughton and was washed out.Challenge Vase Table at June 22. Played three games unless stated.12 Isel7 Workington Juniors (2 played +1 to rearrange)4 Seascale Juniors2 Allonby (1 played 2 to rearrange)2 Broughton (played 2 +1 to rearrange).
