WINDSCALE Club, Seascale, claimed the first West Allerdale and Copeland Cricket Association trophy of the season.
Batting first, they amassed 188-5 with major scores coming from Matt Fiddler, with 35 and Adam Brown, 33, who both retired.
They were supported by an unbeaten 29 from Daniel Lee, which included five ran off the final ball, a 24 from the bat of Lee Fleet and 20 from Steve Brown jnr.
Braithwaite were always behind the rate with only Harry Rigby, 31 retired and Lee Zaninetti, 29, passing 20.
Daniel Lee struck early with 2-26 before captain Steve Brown snr, with 3-10, cleaned up to dismiss Braithwaite for 143 and successfully retain the Downtown Deli Cup.
A major upset occurred in division two as winless Braithwaite Bears shocked unbeaten Whitehaven Colts.
The Bears were bowled out for 118 with extras, as last week reaching 28. But then no Whitehaven batsman made 20 as they were dismissed for 76, Farhan Zahid, with 3-25 and Gary Stewardson, 3-1, doing most of the damage.
Whitehaven Colts bounced back immediately firstly they held Workington Juniors to 125-8 with Liam Hazzard, 30 retired, and Matt Gorley, 35 retired, scoring more than half the runs between them. Will Benson, 4-1, took most of the wickets.
Then the Colts eased to 126-5 thanks to contributions from Jamie Bell, 30 retired and Dean Henderson, 29. Only Liam Armstrong, with 3-11, made any inroads into the visitors’ batting.
In a rare game at Brough-ton, the home side made 122 with Gary Swanston, 26 and Mark Hodgson, 25 not out, offering support to Gary Graham who made 50.
Allonby never threatened as Gary Blacklock, 25 not out, had no support as the visitors were held to 48-9. The old guard of Ian Jackson, 3-3 and Swanton, 3-10, made run scoring difficult and survival almost as challenging.
The Lawyers suffered another crushing defeat in division one after being rolled over for 52 with Ryan Clubley, 4-10 and Gary Ireland, 3-13, enjoying their bowling spells.
In a mere 4.4 overs BCMS had reached 56-3 almost entirely due to Gary Swanston who hammered an eight-ball 34 retired with three sixes and four fours.
Sandwith Roofing’s 144-4 was enough to defeat Royal George 129-4.
The Sandwith Roofing Cup quarter-final saw a much better display by the Lawyers. Their 106 was based around the retirements of three ex-Smiths batsmen; David Hodgson snr, 20, John Burns, 21 and Nick Bulman, 23.
The Broughton bowlers dismissed them with Mark Steadman, 4-2, completing the demolition.
Broughton got off to a good start but they were held to 94-8 and WCLS set up a semi-final against the holders/sponsors’ team.
