Millom pro Geeth Alwis then took out the middle and lower order and Carlisle were dismissed for 86.

Only opener Michael Slack with 42 gave Millom any problems. Alwis took 6 for 8 in 9.4 overs and Dawson 4 for 31 in 12 overs. In reply Millom went to the win at 89 for 3, Alwis making 42 not out.

At Furness Park, the home side got off to a steady start, but when Tom Smith went for 30, and Mark Daly for 23, the remaining batting had no answer to the Cockermouth attack, and were all out in 41 overs for 101.

The Cockermouth professional Amila Weththasinghe returned a remarkable analysis of 5 for 14 in his 15 overs.

In reply Cockermouth went to a comfortable win with 105 for 3 wickets.

The fact that the Whitehaven v Keswick game was even played was a tribute to the hard work put in by Ray Armstrong, the Playground groundsman.

Even on Friday the game looked in extreme doubt as half the ground was covered in standing water.

Whitehaven inserted Keswick and they lost wickets on a regular basis finally ending on 150 all out. Geet Kumara was the main run getter with a determined 60. Young Thomas Sarrington claimed three wickets on a pitch that was not really conducive to his spin bowling.

In reply Haven struggled and with 11 over remaining lost their ninth wicket. However, last man was Haven’s U15 North of England trailist, Jack McNicholas and he held firm with New Zealander Jono Bennet 47 not out to secure a draw for the home side.

At Kirkby, Haverigg batting first, showed needed improvement and at tea were 223 for 7, professional Brenton Parchment top scoring with 87. Mike Etchells bowled a good spell to take 5 for 56. In reply thanks to Sam Marshall’s 52 not out, Kirkby held out for a draw a 154 for 7. Haverigg skipper Steve Evans with 3 for 33 and Jordan Postlethwaite, 3 for 34 kept Haverigg in control.

In their home game with Cleator, Lindal Moor batting first would be fairly happy at tea with 181 on the board,

Chris Brookshaw leading the way with an important 62. For Cleator Dave Blackwell took 5 for 40 and Shaheen Khan, 4 for 39.

Brookshaw then put his bowling boots on and took 5 for 28 as Cleator folded to be 94 all out, and the Moor had a well earned first win.

Home side, Workington, batted first against Penrith, and mainly due Matthew Gorley’s 51 were 163 for 8 when overs ran out.

Arwyn Jones took 3 for 32 with his excellent left hand spin.

In reply Penrith didn’t bat very well, with only professional Upul Fernando looking the part with 37, as Penrith stumbled to 117 for 8 to get the draw. Dan McDermott, 3 for 23, and Gorley 3 for 28, kept Workington always in charge.

In Division One, Dalton took their unbeaten record to Cleator and put the home side in to bat, and only Dave Mossop’s 47 kept the board ticking over, and his side were 161 all out. Adam Gibson bowled well to take 4 for 23.

After tea Dalton were made to work hard for runs, but with a cracking 46 not out from John Bell, Dalton went to their fourth consecutive win at 163 for 6, keeping their 100 per cent record.

Vickerstown hosted their derby game with Hawcoat Park, and took first knock, and at tea were 175 mainly due to Jay Burns making 61. Peter Harrison took 4 for 20. In reply, Hawcoat Park could not cope with the Walneyites attack and were all out for 47, R Lauderdale taking 4 for 25.

Appleby were at Seascale and batting first made 191 for 7, Mark Ousby making 106 not out.

Andrew Knott took 3 for 13 in three overs. Seascale replied with 161 for 4, Jack Stubbings, 47 not out, and

Steve Brown jnr, 39, helping their side to a comfortable draw.

At Egremont the home side had a bad day as Wigton dismissed them for 68, Luke Jackman 3 for 11, and Richard Liddle 3 for 9, doing most damage.

In reply, openers Nick Watt, with 36, and Mike Hill,20, gave Wigton a good start and they went to a good win at 74 for 3.

Waterlogged grounds prevented play between Lanercost and Ulverston, and also Penrith II and Workington II.

Division Two saw Whitehaven II away to Ulverston.

The young side came away with a victory in a game taht could be described as the Robbie Fisher show.

Haven battled first with opener Fisher scoring a maiden 50. He was ably supported by Devesh Shere (69 not out).

Shere has been a real find for the club since moving to work int he area.

Ulverston’s reply faltered early on as Fisher claimed 6 for 12 and Will Benson 2 for 4. This was another fine win for Nathan Lees’ team and they will hope to build on this success.

Higson Cup: Whitehaven 189 (Jonny Bruce 47, Steve Holliday 28) rained off.

Cumbria League: Egremont v Whitehaven, rained off.
