Ex-Whitehaven pro leads way

CARLISLE’S superb all-rounder Saliya Saman is lying in second-place in the batting AND bowling averages at the season’s mid-point.
In both sections he trails fellow pro Ian Daniel, of pacesetters Furness, who has made 404 runs and lost his wicket only four times, leaving him with a staggering average of 101.
Saman, who is about to return home to Sri Lanka for three weeks to take part in the island’s version of the Indian Premier League, averages 86.75.
The ex-Whitehaven ace has also taken 24 wickets so far this term, conceding 268 runs at an average of 11.1, just behind Daniel at 10.87.
Saman will miss three games for Carlisle during the T20 competition though will return for the run-in to the end of the North Lancs campaign.
Next is Cockermouth’s Sri Lankan pro Amila Weththasinghe, on 13.46, ahead of Keswick’s Paul Hindmarch, on 14.89.
The leading amateur bowler is Millom’s Paul O’Callaghan, top wicket-taker with 26 victims costing just over 15 runs each, who is fulfilling the promise shown in recent seasons.
His club-mate Ryan Brown is top run scorer with 581, and given good weather in the second half of the season he could hit the 1,000-run mark, breaking his own record of 846 runs set in 2010.
One long-standing record has already gone. The 158 made by Workington’s Callum Moffat on the opening day of the season at Millom surpassed Geoff Luxon’s unbeaten 148 made in 2003, which had been the highest amateur innings in the Premier Division.
