WATH Brow Hornets picked up a convincing win over Saddleworth 48-18 to keep up their form in the Conference League’s top flight.
It took the home side just three minutes to open the scoring after some good hard work from Mark Troughton and Neil Stewart resulted in Leroy Joe crossing the whitewash.
The visitors hit back with two quick tries to go 4-10 ahead but the home side hit back with a fantastic break from David Pettit to go over in the corner and Peter Caddy converted to level.
Then the Hornets took the lead after Leroy Joe crossed for his second try of the half, Johnstone converting for 16-10.
The game was now in full flow with the giant Saddleworth forwards starting to dominate and it wasn’t long before their hard work was rewarded with a converted try to level again.
With only two minutes of the half remaining, Saddleworth were temporarily reduced to 12 men and Johnstone converted the penalty to give the Hornets a slight 18-16 half-time lead.
Three minutes into the second half and Scott Teare powered his way through several defenders to extend the home side’s lead.
And they were on a roll with Phil Coyles going over after good work from Caddy and Hocking to make it 26-16.
Again Saddleworth’s indiscipline saw them down to 12 and Andrew Stables capitalised, going over in the corner. He was followed over the whitewash by Teare and Caddy converted.
Jamie Devine came into the line breaking away through several markers up into the visitors’ 20-metre area. A quick play-the-ball resulted in the supporting Hocking crossing the whitewash in the corner.
The final minutes of the game belonged to the Hornets as they ran in two more unanswered tries through Scott Pink and Jamie Devine for another good home win.
