Kells on top of Distington

KELLS bagged a second victory in as many weeks over rivals Distington – this time to keep them in pole position in the league’s group A.

After beating Distington to win a place in the Cumbria Cup final last weekend, this Saturday Kells proved they had the edge once more to record a 20-8 victory in the league.

After the opening 40 minutes Kells were ahead 10-0 but Distington fought back and clinched two tries in the second half to put their hosts under pressure, despite Tyrone Dalton being sent from the field.

Lewis Smith, Paul Lowrey, Grant McLaughlin and Carl Schofield scored the all-important tries for Kells, with Ryan Robb converting two.

Distington hit back with a touchdown apiece for Liam Friel and Steven Clark.

Also in group A, Cockermouth were celebrating after getting the better of visitors and current league champions Seaton 20-4.

Seaton, who have not had the best of seasons, could only claim a lone try from Ryan Blair as their reward from the game.

Cockermouth, on the other hand, ran in four tries, with two of them going to Mark Watson, who also added a conversion for good measure.

Stuart Pickering and Mark Haycock also crossed the whitewash, with Jack Clark slotting over a conversion.

The other scheduled game between Glasson and Wath Brow was called off with the Hornets only having 11 players.

The same fate befell Broughton Red Rose, who could only gather nine players for their trip to Maryport so this game also fell by the wayside.

The final match of the day was in group C where Great Clifton Lions were the victors by 24 points to 14 at Egremont.

Tony Huddart led the way for the visitors with a brace of tries to his name, alongside one each for Alan Burridge and Luke Thurlow.

Michael Hill chipped in with three conversions and Scott Burgess added one more.

For Egremont, Kieran Glenn, Charlie Wells and Anthony Leek all touched down, with Matthew Bewsher landing one conversion.

Kells A could not raise a team for their game at Frizington.
