Hornets buzz past Oulton into next round

WATH Brow Hornets’ 36-18 victory at Oulton Raiders saw them progress to the next round of the Conference Cup competition.
Oulton might only be involved in a relegation scrap in the Conference Premier but they gave a spirited display in defeat.
It was Wath Brow who took the lead on four minutes when stand-off Karl Dixon went over for the first try of the game which Peter Caddy converted.
But Oulton hit back quickly when winger Adrian Holdsworth nipped over for a try, converted by Danny Stanley.
Back came the west Cumbrians and centre Francis King went in for their second try, which again Caddy improved.
It was something of a shock though when the home side went in front for the first time on 28 minutes with scrum-half Haydn Mann finding his way through for the third try which Stanley again converted.
Behind at the break Wath Brow came out fighting and Oulton’s defence took a pounding, but held-out until the 62nd minute when prop Jamie Martin got over for a try.
That was the catalyst for a Wath Brow bonanza as they scored four tries in the space of nine minutes to put themselves out of sight.
Winger Greg Dawson, impressive man of the match Dixon, Caddy and hooker Jamie Sharpe all went in for tries. Caddy finisjhed with four successful goal kicks.
Egremont are through to the quarter-finals of the National Conference League Second Tier Cup without a ball being touched.
Castleford Panthers informed the Egremont secretary that they would not be coming and conceded the tie. On their last visit to Egremont three weeks ago the Panthers shipped 66 points and last week they lost their coach. The Panthers secretary said it would be impossible for them to raise a side to travel.
Members of the Egremont committee and coach John Brocklebank were angry at the Castleford decision to forfeit the game.
One official said: “We have blooded several youngsters this season and travel every other week without fail.
“Then there is the cost of the food which had been bought and prepared for the players, not to mention the time and effort in marking out the pitch.”
