DISTINGTON beat hosts Glasson 23-8 in the battle of two of the Cumberland League’s most improved teams.
The visitors opened the scoring after only four minutes when Troy Armstrong finished off a break from deep. And they increased their lead on 19 minutes, Aiden Worthington going over for a try, converted by Ryan Hodgson.
Crucially, Gary Hewer’s side crossed again just before the break, Hodgson converting Stephen Clark’s try to make it 16-0 at half-time.
Glasson have proved tough opponents this year and they mounted a second-half fight-back. Bryan Patterson’s 47th-minute try followed 18 minutes later by a Greg Rowley touch down, to make it 16-8.
Distington edged further ahead with a 70th-minute drop-goal before making sure of their sixth Group A win in nine outings when Clark intercepted to score his second try.
Kells ensured they maintained their three-point cushion at the top thanks a comfortable 30-4 win over Cockermouth. Lewis Smith, Luke Richardson, Andrew Smith, Scott Lofthouse, Steven Smith and Grant McLaughlin shared their tries, Ross Gainford adding three goals. Ryan Burns scored a second-half try for the visitors.
Seaton enjoyed a 30-0 win at Wath Brow, Andy McGlasson leading the way with a brace of tries, Tony Roper, Paul Hopper and Ryan Blair also crossing, Miguel Blanco Charters notching four goals and Paul Bell, one.
Dan Rayson claimed a hat-trick as Broughton Red Rose saw off Flimby 36-4 in Group B. Support came from Grant Alexander, Adam Brough, Conner Edger and Phil Hewitt with tries. Eddy Robinson knocked over three goals and Paul Taylor, one. The visitors replied with a Carl Grima try. Hensingham could not raise a team to host Maryport.
In Group C, Egremont proved too strong for Frizington, running out 38-6 winners. Kev Brown and John Paul Brocklebank both claimed hat-tricks for the visitors, Leon Crellin also touching down. Warren Stainton slotted four goals. Dean Armstrong, with a try and a goal, replied for the home team.
Glasson A and Kells A could not raise teams to travel to Lowca and Aspatria, respectively.
