After the disappointment of missing out on League silverware, Cockermouth Titans beat Aspatria 12-6 to win the Iggesund CARL Cup.

It was a battle royal at Glasson Rangers’ Sandy Lonning pitch

Time with the result in doubt until the very last minute.

Both teams got off to a shaky start and on three minutes Cockermouth could have scored but knocked on over the line.

Then with play moving quickly down field Aspatria did exactly the same thing.

It had been very even but on 13 minutes Cockermouth scored when stand-off Brad Taylor broke the Aspatria defence 15 yards out and raced in unopposed for a try next to the sticks. Jack Clark added the extras.

Straight from the restart, Cockermouth knocked on and from the ensuing scrum Aspatria passed out wide to Shane Evitts who scored a in the corner. Luke Johnston’s kick was just wide.

The remainder of the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second saw some excellent rugby from both teams, with end-to-end action.

On 60 minutes Aspatria were awarded a penalty for a high tackle and Johnston levelled the scores with the kick.

As tensions mounted both sides made failed attempts with drop goals.

On 76 minutes, Cockermouth were awarded a penalty and chose to go for an easy two points from in front of the sticks as Clark duly obliged.

Then with two minutes of the game remaining Taylor broke the Hornets hearts and ensured a Cockermouth victory, when he dived over for his second of the night.

The kick was wide but Cockermouth had done enough.
