Whitehaven have gone for youthful potential with their latest recruit to the 2018 League One squad.

Former Warrington Academy prop Jack Cottington has joined the Recreation Ground club on a one-year deal.

Cottington learnt his rugby with Ashton Bears juniors, the Lancashire amateur club which has appointed Phil Veivers as open-age coach for 2018.

Young Cottington joined the St. Helens youth system and was also at Salford before linking-up with Warrington.

It was while playing for Warrington Under-19s that he was in the same team as Ellis Gillam, a south Cumbrian who signed for Haven earlier in the close season. Gillam was the Under-19s captain.

Whitehaven’s head coach Carl Forster said: “He’s come through a professional system at Warrington and, although he’s only young, he’s a big lad with good skills who will add to the quality and depth of our squad.”

Forster is close to completing his squad ahead of the pre-season warm-up games.
