Whitehaven-born Durham batsman Graham Clark is making more of an impression as a bowler in his early games playing for Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club in Australia.

Clark, who bowls right-arm medium pace, took 4-25 in the Geelong Cricket Association game against Lara, at one stage having the astonishing figures of 4-10 from 10 overs.

He backed that up with two wickets in a T20 game, including a brilliant, diving caught and bowled, and was one of the Two Blues’ best bowlers in the two-day game against Grovedale, again taking two wickets.

Not as fast as his older brother Jordan, who played with Newtown and Chilwell last year, Graham says he concentrates on accuracy more than pace.

"When you look at me and look at Jordan and how big and strong he is, I can’t bowl as fast as him, so I just concentrate on hitting the top of off-stump," he said.

Primarily a batsman – he’s only bowled two overs in three seasons with Durham - a big score is yet to come Down Under for Graham but his club-mates at Newtown and Chilwell know it’s not far away.

"He’s such a classy player the big score will come soon enough," said club president Frank Tuskes.

"He’s fitted in so well as a cricketer and as a person and, just as they did with Jordan last year, our players are enjoying just being on the park with him and also drawing on his experience.

"We have a lot of young players at our club and Graham’s wisdom is already rubbing off on them."

Jordan was also a success at Newtown and Chilwell, helping the club to the finals, and winning the GCA’s highest individual honour, the Jack Sing Medal.

Both brothers played their cricket in Cumbria for Cleator CC, along with elder brother Darren and father Ian.
