Workington Comets team manager Tony Jackson believes his side still have something to fight for as they face three meetings in as many days this weekend.

Although the Championship play-offs are unlikely for Comets, they still have pride to race for and can have an impact on which sides do make the top four.

This weekend will also see a return to two former haunts for Comets skipper Craig Cook, who won back-to-back Premier League titles with Edinburgh and rode for Peterborough last year.

The Monarchs are back at full strength for the first time since June as captain and No1 Sam Masters returns for tonight’s fixture (7pm start).

But Comets came within a whisker of a consolation point at Armadale in May, when the absence of Cook saw former Monarch Steve Worrall disappoint as a guest at No1, so will fancy their chances of getting something.

Edinburgh sit one place and two points behind Redcar, who currently occupy the fourth and final Championship play-off place, but have meetings in hand so a top-four finish is still realistic.

“We’re on first in the doubleheader and they’ll be looking to try to get six points on the board,” Jackson said.

“We got very close to getting a point last time and if we had Craig we would have got one so anything can happen.”

Tomorrow’s home meeting against Newcastle (7pm start) sees Comets come up against a similar side who are lacking at reserve but boast a strong top five, with Chris Harris guesting at No1 in place of Robert Lambert.

With Workington having been dumped out of the Knockout Cup by the Diamonds in controversial fashion this season, Jackson expects there to be an edge to the clash but is confident his team can get the job done.

“Newcastle we have beaten twice at home this season already so there’s no reason why we can’t do it again,” Jackson said.

A third meeting in as many days on Sunday sees Comets travel to Peterborough (5pm start), who were well beaten at Derwent Park last weekend but beat Glasgow at the East of England Showground the following day. They will use rider replacement for Chris Harris, who is riding in a long track event.

Jackson believes his side can impress on a circuit they have a decent record on.

“It’s a team Craig rode for last year and Ty Proctor and Thomas Jorgensen both like the track,” he said.

“We will go there in a positive frame of mind.”

Ryan MacDonald is set to guest for Comets at No7 tonight, with Tom Woolley stepping in tomorrow night and Jake Knight on Sunday.
