Twenty-five local youngsters are set to compete in the prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu European Championships later this month.

Six-time world jiu-jitsu champion Trevor Cunningham is taking some of his talented juniors to the tournament.

Cunningham is the founder of Tapout Knockout MMA Academy which runs from Workington's Sports Centre.

And he will take pupils from across West Cumbria to the event, which this year is being held in Wolverhampton, the home of the Great Britain squad.

The club has youngsters from across West Cumbria, with a number of schools having at least one representative within the squad.

The European Championships already have over 1,000 children entered from a total of 22 countries including some famous clubs such as SBG in Ireland, the home of current UFC multiple weights champion Conor McGregor.

Trevor said: "I believe the pressure that my fighters will bring, will be the key to their success.

"I believe these children will do themselves, the club and the region proud."

Tapout Knockout has second generation fighters who are working to follow in their parents' footsteps.

Multiple European champions Paul Cunningham and Pat Carr have children Connor and Ruby entered and excited to compete in the toughest competition available.

The club also has two current North American Grappling Association champions in Ryan Dobinson, 13, of St Joseph's School, Workington and Thomas Johnston, 11, of Keswick School.

Between them they have had over 50 fights in various martial arts, and are keen the add the Brazilian jiu-jitsu European titles to their already impressive list of honours.

There are also no less than four groups of siblings in Bradley and Katie Quayle, Payton and Deacon Telfer, Kate, Taylor and Tod Herron and Joel and Cohen Caton.

Last year's student of the year Consin Terler and Sophie Gregory are both representing the club in their first competition.

Workington Town Council has supported the club which has made it possible for so many fighters to travel and compete in this event.

They have also had new competition rash guards sponsored by Derwent Fluid Power.
