Whitehaven boxer Billie Donaldson was out for revenge when she headed to Gateshead for a rematch with Dion Duke.

The two female fighters had clashed on Whitehaven and District Amateur Boxing Club's home show recently.

And after going down on points, in what many thought was a controversial decision, Donaldson headed to Gateshead looking to even the score.

Donaldson set the pace in the first session, leading off more and avoiding the counter-punches of Duke.

As the round progressed, Donaldson became more confident and was opening up with combinations that had her opponent on the back foot.

A series of these saw the intervention of referee Ron Cave who gave the hometown boxer Duke a standing eight count.

Duke regained her composure in the second session and was beginning to catch Donaldson with counters as she anticipated her jab.

This was enough to close the gap as she took the second session on all of the judges' cards.

Donaldson was given a stern talking to by her coaching team to up the pace again in the last session and start throwing in punches.

This she did as she again went on the attack and forced her opponent on to the back foot again and connected with some cracking combinations. This was enough to secure a clear unanimous decision.

Coach, Tim Savage, was delighted to see his fighter get the decision.

He said: "This was another cracking bout, both very evenly matched. I was very disappointed that Billie never got the last decision on our show.

"We made a few little adjustments in the two weeks we had to get ourselves ready for the bout. She worked on a few things and certainly executed them in the first session where she was punch perfect.

"Billie forced the pace a bit more this bout and she wanted to even the score. She's our first female to actually go on and compete, and hopefully this will encourage other girls of all ages to follow in her footsteps.

"She very rarely misses a training session and now she has made her debut and then got her first win is even more keen.

"It's difficult to match her and will require a bit of travelling but that’s what you have to do.

"Everyone at the club is very proud of her and she's looking forward to the next one."

The club has also announced plans for the next Kellsfest.

It will take place over the weekend of June 8/9/10 on the Kells Welfare ground. As well as the boxing there will be a junior football tournament, Kells v Wath Brow Hornets, a Northern Soul/Ska night and a free family fun day.

Tickets will be available shortly. For more information contact Tim Savage on 07785 107960.
