Workington Town players have been asked to take a pay cut by club directors.

The club says income streams are drying up and vice chairman Mark Fryer is urging fans and local businesses to get behind them.

Directors met with players earlier this week to assess the situation and they are due to have another get-together next week.

”This is a results based business and it is difficult to get the income streams through at the moment,” said Fryer.

“We are all working unbelievably hard to get these streams into the system.

“We have spoken to the players twice now and we will be speaking to them again next week.

“They have been reasonable in their approach and we all just have to keep working on this.

“But we can’t carry on at the level we are at. We have got to run the business accordingly and we had to look at our fixed costs to keep the club going.”

Fryer says the board have been very active trying to get new people involved with the club to help them out.

But he says it is tough going in the current financial climate and with Town sitting rock bottom of the Championship and facing the threat of relegation.

“I have spoken to a couple of people who are supporters of the club and one of them has committed to us but getting sponsors to come on board is very difficult at this point,” he added.

“The supporters have been fantastic with us but they are a small bunch and we need more people to come through the turnstiles.

“It is really tough, the income streams are drying up and it is about cash flow at any moment in time.

“Having five games away from home doesn’t help at certain points.”

Fryer made a direct appeal to the supporters of the club to get down to the ground and put their money through the turnstiles, starting with Sunday’s visit of Dewsbury Rams.

He is also looking to local businesses who can help out with sponsorship and get the club back on track.

He added: “We need people through the turnstiles and if any sponsors want to come down and help us out we will happily talk to them.”
