St Benedict's School Year 7 football team are flying the flag for Cumbria in a national competition.

The youngsters are enjoying a fantastic run in the English School’s Football (ESFA) National Cup.

They travelled to North Shields earlier this week, playing John Spence High School, where the boys gave an impressive performance, winning the match 5-0.

St Benedict's PE teacher Tony Harrison, said: "I am very proud of the lads after their latest victory.

"They have a great team spirit and have some very talented lads in the team.

"They work extremely hard both in training and in games and deserve the success they are enjoying."

So far in the competition, the boys have beaten West Lakes Academy, Queen Elizabeth Grammar, William Howard School, Morton Academy and now John Spence High School.

They are now the only Cumbrian team left in the competition and will progress to round six.

"It will be interesting to see who will play in the next round which is drawn on Monday," added Mr Harrison.

"At the end of the day if you are one of the best 32 schools in the country at football, you are doing very well indeed as there is very, very stiff competition out there."
