The West Cumbria Snooker League summer campaign division two title has been decided.

In the closest contest ever, three players were capable of taking the title. Workington’s Geoff Smith found himself having a big say in who became the eventual champion.

Firstly, he overcame the form book to turn in a 3-2 winning performance over Seaton’s Paul Smith to dent his chances.

Paul took an early lead only for Geoff to take the next three frames in very similar fashion with Paul minimising the surprise defeat taking the final frame.

Geoff then almost pulled off a second upset as Workington’s Clive Lister was pushed all the way to the deciding frame.

Lister edging the match 3-2. This left Lister in pole position by three points.

The all-important fixture was between Paul Smith and Dave Chapman as either player could take the title from Lister.

The opening frame went to Chapman on the black but Smith then remained the more focused to take the next three frames for the guaranteed match win.

That win, however, did not assure Smith the title as he required the final frame to become champion.

Chapman had required a match win to take the title for himself, the pressure was removed in the final frame, knowing he had lost the match.

It went all the way to the black, only for Chapman to ensure a 3-2 win for Smith meaning Smith narrowly lost out on the title to Lister.

Both players ended on 41 points and seven match wins meaning that the champion would be decided on their home and away combined performances against each other. Lister edging the head to head by six frames to four.

Meanwhile, Workington’s Dave Holland showed glimpses of his pre-season anticipated form to take a 4-1 victory over Brian Kendall in the all United Club tie.

Holland completed his season in fourth with Kendall sixth.

With the division one title wrapped up last week Seaton’s Kevin Basnett cemented his title with a 4-1 victory over Maryport’s Mike Park.

Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham pulled himself off the bottom of division one with an extremely useful 5-0 win over Andrew Mitchelhill.

In the Gray’s Luxury Ice-cream Trophy the opening group two tie was between division one’s Mark Tunstall and Holland of division two. In a competitive affair Tunstall came through the 3-2 victor.
