Thornhill footballers are celebrating after securing a treble with victory over St Bees Athletic in the Presidents Cup.

Two goals from Ross Leeson and one for Glen Meagan helped Thornhill Social FC to their third trophy of the season - in only their second campaign since forming.

The village side added the Presidents Cup to the Egremont and District Sunday League Division Two title and the Division Two Cup they had already claimed.

They secured the league cup with a 4-1 triumph over Lowca FC earlier this month and wrapped up the league title with 10 wins from 12 fixtures.

Only a defeat to another treble-winning side, Mirehouse FC, prevented the club from completing a quadruple.

Mirehouse, who won the Division One League and the Kenny Hailes Memorial Trophy, beat Thornhill Social 2-1 to win their own treble and claim the John Dixon Memorial Trophy.

They were then denied their own quadruple when they lost 3-1 to Thornhill FC in the Division One Cup.

Alongside their treble-winning season, Thornhill Social FC have been busy raising money in the community.

Coach Ian Wells said: "We're over the moon, it's only our second season so we have done well. It's not all about winning, we're trying to do a lot for charity too."

A number of fundraising events have helped out people within their village, with over £2,000 raised to help a nine-year-old girl with Rett syndrome – a rare genetic condition which causes physical and mental disabilities.

The money, raised through a charity football match, went towards funding equipment, such as an eye gaze device, to help Lily Tyson communicate and make her own choices.

They previously collected boxes of food to hand over to more than 70 elderly people in the village over the Christmas period.

And the club is now planning a family fun day to raise more funds for charity.
