Western Lakes Hockey Club’s Under-10 side kept a clean sheet at their second match of the season on Sunday.

The junior tournament, hosted by WLHC at their Cleator Moor home, saw them take on several teams from Wigton and Carlisle, wining all comfortably without goalkeeper Emily Murphy conceding a single goal.

The team hit the back of the net 11 times during the afternoon, including one from seven-year-old St John Norton in his first ever match.

Lee Jacques and Marcus Dean covered the other 10 between them, ably supported by Rowan Bisset-Tabor, Joel Bisset-Tabor, James Jeynes and Saul Shail.

Head coach Paul Maxwell said: "I was so proud of the young side. They looked for space, communicated well and passed superbly."

The Under-12s were also in action on Sunday with goals from Maddie Wood, Luca Aspin and James Hobbs, with Jack Cottier narrowly missing out.

Goalkeeping was shared between Elizabeth Murphy and Peter Hopley who also both took turns filling in for opposing sides.

Earlier in the month, the Under-14 side travelled north to Austin Friars, taking on teams from Carlisle and Kirkby Stephen.

Down in numbers, the team had called upon some of its younger players, clearly giving them experience which they put to good use in their recent tournament.

County training has also started for the season and a number of WLHC players have been selected to be part of the Cumbrian squad covering U13 to U18 age groups.

The junior club trains on Saturday mornings at 9.30am at the all-weather pitch behind the Cleator Moor Bowls Club.

They are always looking for new members aged six to 14 and no experience is necessary.

If you would like to go along, take a gum shield and shin pads – all other equipment can be provided.
