Cleator Moor boxer Scott McGrady topped the bill at the Conservative Club in Egremont last month.

He took on the big-hitting Ryan Fairhurst of Braveheart ABC, Scotland and came away with a win following a unanimous decision.

McGrady didn't get off to the best of starts and was a bit slow out of the blocks.

But he took the big hits from Fairhurst, grew in confidence and upped his workrate to take the round.

In the second, McGrady used his height and reach to good effect, landed the cleaner punches.

Fairhurst forced the Moor man onto the ropes trying to land with powerful combinations but McGrady turned it around and was given the round.

In the final round both boxers upped their workrate with McGrady throwing long-range combinations and Fairhurst trying to close him down and force him on to the ropes.

He was looking for that knockout punch but it never came and McGrady won an entertaining bout unanimously.

A number of boxers from Cleator Moor ABC were in action on the night.

Moor fighter Sam Appleby was taking part in a skills bout against Aidan Raine of Border City ABC, Carlisle.

Both boxers showed neat skills, used the ring well and benefited from the experience as they prepare for a first contest.

It was a hard fought contest as Cleator Moor's Devon Sharpe took on Bill Bennett of Dunstan ABC, Newcastle.

Sharpe went forward, throwing combinations but his opponent boxed back and landed the cleaner punches to take the contest on points.

Clubmate Dhiren Sharma was also in action, as he went up against J Adams of North Star ABC, Sunderland.

Sharma made a slow start against Adams, who was throwing street combinations at his opponent and was landing some clean punches.

Sharma came back at Adams and was using his jab well but in the end the Suhderland fighter's experience shone through and he took the bout.

Another Moor fighter Jordan English went up against another Dunstan boxer H Bell.

English got off to a fast start, throwing a range of punches but Bell kept a high guard and landed with a good body shot.

The referee stopped English and he was unable to carry on.

Carl Nicholson should have been in action but his opponent pulled out at the last minute and he will now prepare for his next bout.

Cleator Moor's Aaron Spence boxed R Gilroy of Furness Catholic, Barrow, in a hard fought contest.

Spence used his jab to good effect, working on his combinations, while Gilroy kept a tight guard and looked for the openings.

He threw lots of combinations but Spence used the ring well and won the round.

In the second Spence kept the same tactics while Gilroy tried to force him onto the ropes and land with a power punch but, keeping his composure, the Moor man took the round.

Into the last and Spence took control of the ring and landed his punches. he kept a clear head and didn't get involved in the slugfest and won on a split decision.

Mrs Mattinson's award for best senior Cleator Moor boxer on the night went to Scott McGrady with the junior award going to Devon Sharpe.

Club coach, Dick Newton, said: "I was really pleased with all the boxers' performances against quality opponents.

"They all gave a good account of themselves and were a credit to the club. They are now looking forward to their next contests."
