Three sisters who play for Whitehaven Amateurs Girls have all signed on for one of the country's top female teams.

Chelsea Callander who plays for the U9s, Ellie-May a member of the U10s and Leanna who plays for the U12s attended trials at Sunderland AFC Ladies with each of them impressing the Lady Black Cats coaches.

Sunderland AFC Ladies play in the highest division of women’s football in England.

Rob Campbell, a coach at Whitehaven Amateurs Girls, praised the “football-mad” sisters stating they had signed onto the club's development player program.

He said: "It is a very high level with some of the best players in the north there.

"I'm really pleased for all three girls to be doing so well with their football and getting this fantastic opportunity at Sunderland Ladies.

"Their hard work, determination, dedication, as well as enthusiasm, for football is infectious among their teams.

"It's great for Whitehaven Amateurs, not only providing football for all abilities but having a pathway for girls to follow should they wish to progress as a footballer and achieve their potential."

Rob, who coaches Chelsea, described her as a girl who generally starts attacks for the team and "sets the rhythm for other players by being ferocious in defending our playing with a desire to start attacks".

Winger Ellie May was "speedy, skilful and not afraid to take a shot on, cool under pressure and another good example to others," he added.

While midfielder, Leanna, who is also training to be a referee, has an eye for the pass and is a "joy to watch".

Rob added: "I wish all three sisters the best of the luck and I want them to know they'll always be part of the Whitehaven Amateurs family and we'll support them any way we can."

The trio are following in the footsteps of their dad, Stephen Callander, who also played for Amateurs.

Whitehaven Amateurs girls section is going from strength to strength, now boasting nearly 150 players of all ages.
