Speedway ace Richard Lawson pleased with Workington Comets' start

Workington Comets’ Richard Lawson says his side have had a great first week – despite a mechanical failure denying them a hat-trick of wins.
Comets took a victory at Sheffield on Thursday and followed that up by breaking the 60-point barrier at home to Redcar before they were unlucky to lose to Newcastle on Sunday.
That defeat was particularly galling for Lawson.
He said: “We led all the way so it was disappointing to lose it like that.
“We have just got to pick ourselves up because we felt we just had a bit of bad luck. In heat 15 Rene Bach got a nudge and although I didn’t see it I was told it was a bad call by the ref and then in the re-run I barely got to the first bend.”
Comets had needed Lawson to win the heat to take the victory but a fault with the spark plug meant his bike was not performing.
Despite the disappointing nature of the defeat, Lawson has been impressed with the performances shown by the team in their first three matches.
He added: “At the end of the day we have got seven points from three meeting and it is good to see the team doing so well.”
Lawson also had special praise for youngster Kyle Howarth who has scored big points from reserve.
He said: “Kyle is flying at the moment and has impressed everybody.
“I hadn’t seen too much of him but he is a nice kid. It is good to see him doing so well and he has gone beyond my expectation.”
Lawson is also enjoying riding at number three pairing Adam Roynon, which could turn out to be one of the strongest duos in the Premier League.
He said: “Me and Adam have a good relationship as we are not fighting to beat one another. I’ve had a couple of partners who didn’t look out for you but me and Adam do and it makes it a lot easier when you have someone helping you out.”
