Shortlist unveiled for 2009 Celebrating Excellence Awards
Last updated at 14:28, Friday, 07 August 2009
The countdown to the Celebrating Excellence Awards 2009 is officially on after judges this week unveiled the shortlist of nominations.
There are 14 categories, ranging from doctor, nurse or midwife of the year to a lifetime achievement award.
It is the second year that the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS trust has held the awards for its workforce.
They aim to celebrate the achievements of staff at the Cumberland Infirmary, West Cumberland Hospital and Penrith Birthing Centre.
Its chief executive Carole Heatly said: “Every year, many thousands of patients in north Cumbria receive top quality care from our staff, whose extraordinary commitment to others is inspirational.
“We have many areas of development, excellence in our hospitals and we want to ensure that north Cumbria’s talents, abilities and innovation is recognised locally, regionally and nationally.”
Nominations for the awards opened in the spring, giving staff a chance to put forward the names of colleagues they felt had gone above the call of duty to help patients and improve NHS standards.
There is also a special Patients’ Award, which gives members of the public an opportunity to highlight excellent care they have experienced and individuals who have gone that extra mile to help.
Since the nominations closed at the end of May, a team of judges have been pouring over the entries, looking for the most outstanding achievements.
The panel was made up of trust chairman Mike Little; chief executive Carole Heatly; Cumbrian GP Dr Ian Mitchell, of NHS Cumbria; The Royal College of Nursing’s regional director, Glen Turp; Heather Livesey, head of the University of Cumbria School of Nursing and Midwifery; Margo Christie, the associate director of nursing at NHS Dumfries and Galloway; CN Group’s managing director, Terry Hall; Linda Cheng, chair of the Patient Panels; and Alan Alexander, representing Cumbria LINks.
Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on some of the individuals and teams on their final shortlist. The winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony at Rheged on September 3.
The event – organised by CN Event Management – is being funded through sponsorship, giving businesses and organisations a chance to show their support for the hospitals. The full shortlist is:
