One of west Cumbria’s best known family businesses has been sold. Chambers DIY, on James Street, Workington, has been snapped up by Longhorn Hardware, an arm of joinery, window fitting and entertainments firm Carlisle Glass. Chambers will keep all of its 11 staff on after the deal but will lose its historic name and be re-branded Longhorn Hardware in the summer.King Street Developments, developer of the Picture House flats on Botchergate, Carlisle, has gone into administration. The business was placed into administration during a High Court hearing in Manchester last month. The long hours culture in the UK means workers miss out on exercise, relaxing and even relationships. A survey carried out by American Express shows four out of five workers were too busy in their jobs to enjoy themselves at home.The owner of Howden Joinery – based in Workington, Whitehaven and Barrow – saw profits rise by 5.9 per cent.National Express has made a strong start to the year.

Insolvency figures look set to hit a new high in 2008 after rising for the first time in more than a year during the first quarter. A total of 25,264 people in England and Wales were declared insolvent during the period, a rise of 1.7 per cent compared with the previous three months, the Insolvency Service said.
