Elaine Myers, 53, and her husband William, 57, have opened Let’s Write Card & Gift Shop in the former Dalzell Shoes Ltd unit, which has stood empty since the 2009 floods.

The couple, who currently live in Appleby, are selling their house and hope to move to the area in a couple of months.

They have been running their business for seven years, firstly at Wetheriggs Pottery, near Penrith, and later at The Pot Place garden centre, at Plumpton, near Penrith.

Mrs Myers said: “We wanted to open a shop on a high street and couldn’t think of a better place than Cockermouth. We can’t wait to move.”

The shop sells cards, gifts, stationery, handbags and jewellery.
