Boat gift was just splashing

SIR – I have heard many comments since the opening of the box on Friday as to the disagreement and disappointment that the sea cadets were presented with a Pico, (sailing boat).
This kind of recognition has been a long time in coming for the sea cadets who put a lot of hard work into Whitehaven supporting causes and helping at events in other parts of Cumbria as well as the town. The sea cadets do not get MoD funding, unlike other cadet forces, and must raise money themselves to keep the unit running and to purchase equipment. So to get a gift like this is wonderful and well deserved.
These cadets are a marvellous group of young people who along with a dedicated staff give up their free time to be part of the sea cadet corps.
Whitehaven should be proud and congratulate the cadets and encourage them to keep up the good work. Well done and thank you to those who have recognised the contribution the sea cadets give to the town of Whitehaven.
