CAMPAIGNERS took to the streets of Stan Laurel’s birth place to protest against a proposed nuclear dump in Cumbria.

And Radiation Free Lakeland says the iconic theme music of bungling duo Laurel and Hardy, the Cuckoo Song, should be adopted by the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely Partnership, which is overseeing a consultation asking if Cumbria is willing to house a £4bn nuclear waste repository.
The group has written to Ulverston Town Council in a bid to persuade councillors to oppose the process.
They gathered 75 signatures of support from members of the public at the demonstration in Ulverston on Saturday.
Dressed in mock biohazard suits, members of the group adorned the Laurel and Hardy statue, outside Coronation Hall, with anti-nuclear posters.
Marianne Birkby, RFL spokeswoman, said: “The weather was terrible and town was a bit quiet but we still had 75 people stop to sign our letter in just two hours. ”
The group’s letter to Ulverston Town Council states: “Please join those town and parish councils who have already sent a strong message to government that they will not be bribed into accepting the unacceptable and have voted ‘no’ to going any further on with this plan.”
The group is planning protests in Hawkshead and Penrith.
Ulverston Green Party set up a stall in Market Place, encouraging residents to oppose the repository plans.
