Youths given tour of courts

AROUND 20 local teenagers were taken to police cells – but all in a good cause.
The 16-year-olds were part of National Citizen Service (NCS), a personal and social development programme which helps young people develop confidence, learn new skills and make lasting friendships.
They visited Whitehaven police station and former magistrates court and were shown how police dealt with theft as well as asking questions of the attending magistrates, a defence solicitor and Inspector Jim Lloyd.
He said: “It’s definitely a worthwhile opportunity for the group and it was interesting to hear the questions they had prepared.”
The scheme involves three weeks of full-time activities, including outward bound challenges, life-skills, such as cooking and budgeting, followed by voluntary work.
This year, as part of the project, the teenagers have volunteered to paint the youth centre in Frizington, giving something back to the community.
Mike Priestley of Inspira (formerly Connexions), said: “NCS is an opportunity for young people to develop important skills that are valued by employers and universities and to have fun trying out new activities with new friends.
“Last year’s graduates told us that NCS had given them increased confidence, a sense of achievement and an experience of adult life. Most importantly NCS demonstrates what young people can achieve together and what a positive impact they can make in society.’’
Sgt Richard Farnworth, who is involved in the project, said: “I am pleased that we have been able to support the NCS project again this year as I believe the young people get a lot out of it.
“The court room session has given the young people a lot to think about and hopefully it will make them all think about the consequences of criminality. Hopefully, none of them will ever find themselves on the wrong side of the criminal justice system.’’
NCS graduates and their families will celebrate their achievements at a ceremony at the end of the summer.
