Held at the Castle Park, in Whitehaven, the Be Yourself in the Park event will be a chance for young people to enjoy local talent on offer.

The event, on Saturday, August 18, will feature musicians, including Balmoral Road, Wonderboy and the Wolf, Gavin McKew and Emma Dockeray.

An entrepreneurs tent will be set up where Tom Salmon will be showcasing his retro iPops, while St Benedict’s School student, Mahmuda Begum, will be doing henna tattoos. Gates open at 1pm and bands start at 2.30pm.

The afternoon has been organised by Copeland Youth Council to provide something for young people in the borough.

Alex Graffin, 17, of the youth council, said the event promotes the need for young people to express themselves.

She said: “There is a lot of people who are stereotyped around here. The whole idea is for people to be themselves.”

Nineteen-year-old, John Macleod, also a member of the youth council, said: “An event like this will promote the youth council, we want to attract more members. It also gives young people something to do for free on a Saturday afternoon.”

While 13-year-old Bethany Bowe said she wanted to get involved in planning the event to provide something “fun” for teenagers to do.

The youth council is supported by Copeland Council and Inspira (formerly Connexions).

Mike Priestley, Inspira’s area manager for West Cumbria, said: “A priority for the youth council is to give more young people things to do. They wanted to provide a good activity for young people on a Saturday afternoon.”

Teenagers will be able to buy mocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails, and a tuck shop will be available. All proceeds go to charity.

The youth council has received a grant of £10,000 from Cumbria County Council to provide a series of events in the borough, including this one. The money will also go towards the running costs throughout the year.

Funding has been provided, through the grant, to pay for transport for youngsters who live in the south of Copeland to attend the youth afternoon.

More youth council information is on Facebook.
