Young citizens renew their oath

SCOUTS and cubs stood shoulder to shoulder at Seascale on Tuesday to renew their promises and mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
From the youngest to the oldest, members of the scouts, beavers, cubs, guides, brownies and rainbows took part in a parade, where they walked from Seascale Primary School to the seafront.
It was part of a series of events held in the village on Tuesday for the Jubilee celebrations.
Activities were also held including a raffle, treasure hunt, dressing up and afternoon tea.
Around 200 members of the community, along with visitors, enjoyed the events, which was jointly organised by Shackles off Youth project and the uniform groups. It was also supported by Seascale Parish Council.
Lyn Edwards, Shackles Off project leader, said: “We had all sorts of activities, from decorating cupcakes to crown making, face painting and dressing up. There was free tea, coffee and scones and we also had a sing song, starting with I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside and ending with the National Anthem.
“It was a great community event, the only thing that put a damper on the day was the weather.”
Phil Taylor, one of the volunteers, said a small presentation was made to Matt Fleming, who is the oldest resident in the village at the age of 99.
The celebrations continued throughout the borough as residents held various events. A tea party was held by Hannah and Jim Norris, of Gosforth Road, Seascale. They had a variety of 1950s’ style food for the celebration event, including Spam sandwiches, and a jubilee-themed cake.
At the White Mare pub in Beckermet, there was a change of plan to the scheduled events, as the rain fell.
Phil Ward, of the White Mare pub, said: “We had a hog roast, children’s entertainer and party games.”
There was also a community sing along in the pub, followed by a firework display.
Mr Ward said: “The atmosphere has been fantastic. Everyone has thanked us for putting an event on like this. The kids have enjoyed it – that’s the main thing.”
He said a funfair had been planned, but due to the weather conditions, it was postponed. It will return to the village next month for the annual village hog roast fun night on July 13.
A meal was set to take place yesterday (Wednesday) at the pub for the Copeland Conservatives Ladies Diamond Jubilee Luncheon .
