Word on the street

“THE Connexions staff at my school are really good. Liz Kay is helping me with work experience in the summer. I’m looking forward to working, so it would be good if there was more Saturday jobs around.”
Becky Rutherford, 17, Kells (Year 12 student at St Benedict’s)
“There isn’t much, like Becky said. I would like to see more jobs for young people. I’m looking to find a Saturday job but all the businesses are saying to wait until September when the Year 13 students leave to go to university.”
Danielle McAlone, 17, Kells (Year 12 student at St Benedict’s)
“THERE should be more stuff for young people to do, more sports activities would be good. Connexions has been great as it helped me get an apprenticeship with Rathbones. They were great in helping me.”
Callum Davidson, 17, of Workington.
“IT WOULD be good to have more help in finding jobs. When you go to places like Connexions, they have opportunities from across Cumbria. I’s difficult when you don’t have a car.”
Simon Westray, 17, Mirehouse (Art and design student at Lakes College)
“It would be good to have more help in finding different work placements and apprenticeships, rather than just at Sellafield. I’m doing a travel and tourism course at lakes College, so it would be good to have work placements at The Beacon or travel agents.”
Amy Guy, 17, Thornhill
“THERE isn’t enough for young people to do. There is more things for boys to do than for girls.”
Amelia Megan, 18, Egremont
“I PERSONALLY don’t do much at the moment, but my mates go to Music Zone and from what I’ve heard it’s really cool. They play music and record their own stuff. When I was younger me and my mates used to go to the Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project which was great. My brother goes there now.”
Alice Bowskill, 16, of Whitehaven
“I HAVE heard of the Harbour Youth Project and I know a little girl who goes there and really enjoys it. I think there probably is a lot going on for young people, but you don’t really here about it.”
Lauren Longhurst, 18, of Whitehaven
“I THINK there is quite a diverse range of activities going on, but people tend to find out through word of mouth rather than things being advertised. At the moment I am involved in Soundwave. A few years ago I was involved in the Hensingham Scout group, which was an incredibly large group.”
Josh McDonald, 17, of Whitehaven
“WHAT there is for young people is pretty good, but there isn’t very much of it.
We need something new – or it would be good to bring the old Gaiety cinema back. It’s quite expensive for someone my age to go to Workington and back. I think a lot of people would support a cinema in Whitehaven.”
Jack Brown, 16, of Hensingham
“What’s here is great, Connexions is great, but there seems to be a lot of similar activities. Once you’ve done one thing, there isn’t much more to do. We need something new, something that is not already in the area.”
Jack Sharkey, 16, of Egremont
“What we have got is good, but there is a lot of similar activities. If you join one group they are likely to provide similar things as other groups.”
Daniel Pugh, 17, of Frizington
“Everyone has different interests and so we are looking for different groups to join. I’m part of the Viking group where there is about eight regular people but the numbers differ each time. It’s great because we travel all over the country and you have a good laugh.”
Johnathen Everett, 16, of Whitehaven
“I THINK the music scene is absolutely fantastic. I go to the Playground event in town, then there’s the Whitehaven Festival and Cockrock. You find that when there are music events loads of people turn up, but there is nothing happening every week.
“The sports activities around the town are great – I play for Whitehaven Miners every week.”
Josh Shepherd, 16, Hensingham.
