Whitehaven School ends year with red carpet night

A GLAMOROUS awards evening was held for Whitehaven School pupils last week.

The Oscars took place last Thursday at Whitehaven Civic Hall where students, parents and teachers celebrated the achievements of pupils throughout the school.

This is the second year that a whole-school awards ceremony has been held. During the evening there was a variety of music acts as well the presentation of awards to pupils.

The school’s business manager, Mark Redding, said students Hannah Dorney and Cameron Rigg did a fantastic job hosting the evening. The opening speech was given by Year 8 pupil Keisha Dixon.

During the evening Kieran Scotchbrook performed Better Together by Jack Johnson and his own piece, Traffic. He also performed Drive By by Train along with fellow students Thomas Metcalfe and Matthew Johnson. They were joined by dancers Charlotte Cassie and Natalie Halcrow.

Mr Redding said in true Oscar style there was even a video message from one of the award winners, Year 11 student Emily Cummings.

He said: “Emily Cummings won the sports and PE award in her year group but was not able to come to the awards night as she was representing Copeland in Gateshead in the national championships for high jumps.

“She sent in a video message which was played on a big screen in the hall.”

He said the evening was a great success and one of the parents said it was a classy and special night which made her and her daughter really proud.

The mayor of Copeland, Coun Peter Tyson, attended the prestigious event as well as Jesse Joe Parker and Luke Isakka from Whitehaven Rugby League Football Club.
