Whitehaven's Olympic torch day plan
Last updated at 13:27, Thursday, 03 May 2012
THE world’s most famous torch relay will hit Whitehaven next month – surrounding by a 100-vehicle convoy, Metropolitan Police officers and the nation’s media.
Due on Thursday, June 21, the London 2012 Olympic torch will be carried through the town followed by a large convoy which will result in traffic delays.
The relay will enter the town at 3.10pm along New Road, onto Bransty Row, George Street, Church Street, Duke Street, Scotch Street and Lowther Street. The torch will also be stopping outside Lloyds TSB for around five minutes. At the end of Lowther Street, the convoy will turn onto Strand Street, along the harbour, back on to Bransty Row and back up the New Road.
New Road and Lowther Street will be closed from noon on the day, and parking will be suspended along the route.
Organisers warn there will be long delays along the A595 and on the routes in and out of Whitehaven. However, extra activities, held at Whitehaven Sports Centre, Castle Park, outside Whitehaven Civic Hall, Lowther Street, The Beacon and the harbour, will be laid on for schoolchildren to “help ease traffic congestion’’.
