Where to watch bonfire displays in safety
Published at 11:56, Thursday, 01 November 2012
A SPECTACULAR firework display takes place in Whitehaven on Friday evening.
The professional display is at Hensingham’s Cumbria Sports Academy, from 7.30pm. Tickets are still available for the event, which will feature stalls and refreshments.
The annual display is organised by volunteers Janice and Kevin McCluskey, of Whitehaven Community Fundraising. It is supported by Cumbria Police and Copeland Council.
Mrs McCluskey said: “We had a lot of good feedback about the display last year and this time around we’ve bought more fireworks so it’ll be even bigger and better.”
Refreshments will be provided by volunteers from the sports academy. Representatives from Bransty School will sell glow sticks and hold a tombola and a selection of cupcakes will be on sale. Joanne Hunter, of West Lakes Jewellery, will be selling a selection of jewellery.
Tickets for the event are £5 each. Children aged two and under go free.
Money from the ticket sales will be donated to local causes. To buy tickets, call 01946 61230 or go to Whitehaven’s Tourist Information Centre, Strange Fruits in the Market Place or Billy Bears Fun Centre at Kells.
Organisers thank Shepley Engineers Limited and the Speedy Hire centre for the loan of two floodlights to be used on the night.
There will be a spectacular bonfire near the historic Candlestick Chimney overlooking Whitehaven harbour this Saturday night.
For the second year running, the National Trust is organising the event and hoping the weather will be kind to entice the public along.
Chris Gomersall, for The Trust said, says there won’t be a fireworks display but plenty of mulled wine to help keep onlookers warm.
