This year - 2010 - marks the centenary of the one of the UK's worst mining disasters.
On May 11, 1910, an explosion killed 136 miners working underground at Wellington Pit in Whitehaven. Their sacrifice has not been forgotten. This year will see a number of events marking the centenary of the tragedy. See our Wellington Pit section for more details.
