THE role of the World Trade Organisation, the Palstine question and the problems of water management in Asia were issues for which sixth-form students of an independent boys school in Northwood were called to find resolution, when they represented their country at the European Youth Parliament earlier this month.

The ten upper-sixth students Adam Baylis-West, Chris White, Jonathan Kingsley, Henry Phillips, Jonathan Fraser, Raj Gathani, Hiren Desai, Chirag Sanghrajka, Leo Pollak and Alex Bloch of Merchant Taylors School in Sandy Lodge, Northwood claimed their place on the European Youth Parliament which met for ten days in Portugal, following their triumph over 14 other schools at the national debating contest held in York in October.

The meeting of the European Youth Parliament, which this year comprised sixth form students from 23 different nations either within the EU or on its fringes, is a non-competitive exercise which aims to foster a spirit of mutual understanding, tolerance and respect between the delegates
