A MAN and a woman were arrested in a raid on a suspected brothel in a Whitehaven bungalow last Thursday.
Police are investigating reports that the house, at College View, Monkwray, has been used for illegal sexual purposes.
A 45-year-old man is being held on suspicion of breaching immigration conditions and a 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. Both are Malaysian, said a spokeswoman for the immigration service.
She added, yesterday, that both had been arrested pending their removal from the UK, which she added, was imminent.
A probe into possible people trafficking has also now been launched.
Officers were alerted after a business card offering an oriental massage service at the bungalow was recovered from a Workington bookmakers.
The card gave two mobile phone numbers and showed a picture of an scantily-clad oriental woman.
Ten officers raided the house at about 2.30pm. They did not force entry and were allowed in by the occupants.
Officers searched the house and back garden and recovered several documents relating to immigration and travel.
The arrested pair – both of Asian origin – will now be dealt with by the immigration authorities.
