Thousands greet torch in Whitehaven

Have your say

Fanrastic local turnout and excellent torch bearers for a memorable once in a lifetime event.
The only downer I have is why where non Cumbrian street hawkers allowed to exploit young families by selling plastic flags and torches at £2 a time?. If this money was to help local causes or young athletes I could support this fully, but these pariahs were obviously following the torch across the country and making money out of poor communities, I did report this to the police but do not know whether anything was done.

The true meaning of the Olympics, the Olympic spirit: pump nine plus billions of GBPs into London, create huge hypocrisy by having the named sponsors, huge area of London regenerated and improved on a permanent basis, etc, et al. The benefits for West Cumbria . . . ? Nil. Keep paying your taxes people, London needs your money, after all, we're all in this together, aren't we?

You got a good view on Duke street and the official website said the torch would start round the corner from the old bus station not near the pelican also there is concrete bollards on the harbor so no vehicles can pass there

No, the torch was supposed to pass down New Road, and not in the bus. Hence why loads and loads of people gathered there. A last minute 'change of plan' altered this for some unknown reason. But the fact all of those people were ignored after making the effort to support the local people carrying the torch was an absolute disgrace.

I think anon is referring to the fact that along the harbourside wasn't a very good place to see the action. The support vehicles and stuff all went down strand street and the crowds were only one side of the action, meaning that it was 5 or 6 deep with not much of a view.

Must try harder next time (what do you mean there wont be a next time???0
