Thousands enjoy Black Combe Country Fair

AROUND 2,000 visitors enjoyed the sights at Black Combe Country Fair on Monday.

Organisers said the event was a huge success – and they are hoping to make it even bigger and better next year.

Stephen Lowthian, show secretary, said: “This is our fourth year at Bootle.

“Last year, we had great weather and lots of people came. This time, it wasn’t a bad day. We had one or two little showers, but we had lots of activities on offer. I think we have built on last year’s success.”

He said there was something on offer for everyone at the fair, which was opened by BBC Radio Cumbria’s Richard Nankivell.

There was a host of activities for children to enjoy including a climbing wall, various sports and a bouncy castle. A selection of colourful vintage cars and machinery were also on show. Visitors had the chance to view a large selection of trade stalls as well as other activities including clay pigeon shooting and fly-fishing demonstrations.

Mr Lowthian said the terrier and lurcher racing was a definite highlight of the day, as was the Cumberland wrestling.

He added that the dog show was as popular as ever, with a variety of breeds taking part in the event.

Also due to take place over the weekend was the Millom and Broughton Show.

The event had to be called off after heavy rain on Friday night left West Park under four inches of water.

A miniature lake had formed next to the entrance to the field, with extremely muddy conditions making it unsafe to hold the event on Saturday.

The 104th annual Ennerdale Show was set to take place yesterday (Wednesday).
