Old Bridge in Egremont: decorated for the Queen's Coronation in 1953

The picture was kindly loaned to us by Keith Boyd who lives in the centre house, number 12.

He moved into the 300-year-old property, which lies just below Egremont castle, 25 years ago and found the previous occupier, a photographer, had left behind a number of photos of the house taken throughout the decades. Among this photographic record was this image from June 1953 when the town would be celebrating the crowning of the country’s new monarch, following the death of George VI.

Keith tells us: “There was an ex-Navy man, Tommy Tomlinson who then lived at 10 Old Bridge (the house extreme left of the photo) and apparently it was all his doing.’’

There are two ‘guards’ on sentry duty at the entrance to the street, a Queen Elizabeth ‘ship’, complete with sailors, flower tubs decorated with coronets, lots of flags and of course yards of home-made bunting.
