Text lands continental market trader in court

TWO continental market traders were wrongly arrested after another trader allegedly sent a malicious text message to police, a court has heard.

Dutch cheese seller Branco Van Wissen, 25, appeared at West Cumbria Courthouse on Monday, following an alleged incident at Whitehaven’s Tall Ship event on Saturday.

He was charged with perverting the course of justice, in that he allegedly sent a malicious text message to police which resulted in the arrest of two men.

Mr Van Wissen did not enter any pleas during his court appearance. Magistrates sent the case to Carlisle Crown court where it will be heard on September 22.

A police spokesperson said the two men originally arrested were released without charge.
