Strictly come robot dancing...

IT was a dance-off with a difference at Sellafield last week as two Egremont schools competed to create the robot with the best rhythm.

Year 5 pupils from Orgill and St Bridget’s accepted Sellafield’s Robot Dance Challenge on Wednesday last week, in which teams had to build a mini-robot from Lego and programme it to dance to a track of their choice.

Tony Gill, from Cumbria STEM Centre, talked the pupils through the use of software and equipment, with Sellafield Ltd STEM ambassadors on hand to help the students.

A panel of judges, made up of Elaine Woodburn (Copeland Council), Steve Dawson (Babcock) and Emma Law (Sellafield), awarded marks for design and choreography with the top prize going to team Jabbis, for their robot Dynamo Jabinator, and the award for ‘Wow Factor’ going to team Young Robo for their creation named Jimmy.

It was the turn of the secondary schools on Thursday, with the Ninja Cats team from St Joseph’s (Workington) taking home the overall prize for their robot Steve, with Whitehaven School’s Team Survivor said to have the ‘Wow Factor’.
