SEAHORSES, turtles and even mermaids have been found washed up on St Bees beach!

Local children and their families have been getting artistic on the golden sands – producing creative creatures using only the natural resources that were at their disposal.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust hosted Sunday’s Beached Art event, which featured a range of activities related to our wonderful Cumbrian coastline, including watersport demonstrations, rock pool rambles and a seawatch survey.

However the sand-sculpture competition proved the biggest hit with the hundreds who turned out to enjoy the day.

The judges had a tough task on their hands choosing the winners from the array of beautifully-crafted sculptures.

First place went to Cleator Moor sisters, Charlotte and Stephanie Penrice, aged eight and seven respectively, with their turtle, starfish and dolphin sculptures.

Sandy Squid earned runner-up spot for Finley Todhunter, and dad Phil, from Whitehaven, while a scene of St Bees Head impressed the judges enough to earn Lawrie and Rowan Walker, with dad Simon, third place.
