Stadium fallout: Whitehaven RL
Last updated at 11:24, Thursday, 03 May 2012
MUCH has been written about the news last week that Whitehaven will no longer be a host for the Rugby League World Cup. Some of this has been accurate and some of the speculation has been just that.
I wanted to write on behalf of Whitehaven Rugby League Club to give our side of the story.
Like everyone else, we are disappointed that the World Cup won’t be coming to Copeland. We supported the bid and recognised how good it would be for the town. However, our end goal has always been the stadium development.
We are pleased, therefore, that this development will still happen albeit taking a little longer than was hoped, and confirm our commitment towards it.
I want to assure all your readers that all of the partners involved in the stadium project have worked hard to make it happen. We’ve worked together with a joint vision, however, despite many years work and negotiations, the partners have been unable to reach an agreement with the Whitehaven Miners’ Organisation.
That’s why we sadly had to end our World Cup involvement and look at other ways of making the stadium project work.
