Stadium details kept under wraps Add comments

FINANCIAL details of the Whitehaven Pow Beck community sports stadium deal are to be kept secret.
Agreement subject to legal work being completed without any more hitches has been reached between the Pow Beck partners and Whitehaven Miners’ Welfare.
But Copeland councillors have been told that a confidentiality agreement meant that the details could not be released.
Tory group leader David Moore, who has questioned the stadium’s financial viability, told last Thursday night’s meeting that the public should be told as the project was in the public domain.
The deal had stalled over a reported Miners’ demand of £750,000 for access through to the planned stadium.
Executive councillor Phil Greatorex said he could not comment on the financial aspects because of the confidentiality agreement.
However he added: “It certainly wasn’t the £750,000 initially demanded by the Miners and their parent organisation.”
The council meeting came only a few hours after the official announcement that three RL World Cup games would be played in the new Pow Beck stadium.
It is hoped to have the stadium ready for use well in advance of the fixtures in the autumn of 2013.
Mayor of Copeland John Jackson described it “as a massive achievement.”
