Social media offences soar in Copeland

THE number of people charged with social media crimes in Copeland has risen by 300 per cent in three years.

By Mark White

Following a Freedom of Information request, The Whitehaven News can reveal an increase in crimes on Facebook and Twitter since 2011. And former Chief Constable Stuart Hyde warns the situation is only going to get worse.

He said police have seen a huge increase in social media context incidents, crimes that have references to Facebook or Twitter. “In 2011, it was 14,000 references; in 2012 it was 17,000; and in 2013 it was 27,000.” Mr Hyde added social media is “a great way to keep in contact with people and find out news almost instantly, but there are risks. People start to say things online that maybe they wouldn’t say normally, like racist, anti-religious and threatening messages which are illegal on the street and just as illegal online.”

Recently two men were jailed for social media offences in Copeland. One case involved online harassment, the other was sentenced after he posted a naked picture of a woman on Facebook.

See The Whitehaven News this week for a in-depth feature.

Have your say

I find it odd that people can be jailed for stupid, off-the-cuff, rubbish whilst posting online, but UKIP and their like on the extreme-right can be as racist and homophobic as they like in the press, on TV, on billboards etc, and nothing is done.
We need an explanation as to why British tax-paying citizens can be jailed for this, whilst tax-avoiding millionaire, ex-bankers like Farage seem to be allowed to come out with any hateful nonsense and getaway with it.

@ retiredgreyhounds comment how on earth would a charge reduce the abuse, what are you saying people who have money would not do this,my daughter has faced abuse off a drunkard 40yr old female from whitehaven, she posted the abuse numerous times usually when the dole is paid and when she sobered up she removed it, the biggest sickener is the idiot friends that agree and like,i would recomend that if you see abuse photograph it with your phone and show it to police they will prosecute so don't wait for them to remove it,remember you have done nothing wrong so why should you be punished or leave, the more that do this the less abuse will happen because they are cowards and run with their tails between their legs when the police come.
