Skateboarding Santas have fun

A GROUP of young Santas will swap their sleighs for skateboards for a special festive gathering this weekend.

The Santa-themed Skate Jam takes place at Workington skate park on Saturday at noon, the purpose of which is to gather support and raise awareness of the campaign to build Kie Park – a multi-purpose facility in Whitehaven in memory of Kieran Goulding.

The fancy dress event – to which all are invited – has been organised by Dylan Sewell, the vice chair of the Kie Park Committee.

He said: “There will be a bunch of prizes from the many sponsors of the event and it will be an all-round good time.

“There will be no money taken, it is purely just to have a great day and show everyone that there is a need, and a desire, for Kie Park.”

An area of land in Hensingham has been earmarked for the multi-purpose facility for BMXs, scooters and skate-boarders, planned in memory of Whitehaven lad Kieran, 15, who tragically died in the Keswick School bus crash in 2010.

Dylan added: “The plan to create the facility is going great, and we’re getting a tremendous amount of support and positivity from the community.

“We are in talks with a very reputable and established UK skatepark builder and are having unique drafts of possible skatepark layouts as we speak.”

A Facebook event page has been created for Skate Jam and can be found at www.facebook.com/events/125923227567846.

To donate to the campaign send a cheque (made payable to Kie Park) to Kieran’s mum Tracey Nicholson at 19 Ruskin Drive, Whitehaven, or take it to The Whitehaven News office, Edgars (Rowrah), Hillside (Distington) or Plaza Cinema (Workington).
